Trident Technologies Overview

Trident Microsystems

Trident Microsystems was a fabless semiconductor company that in the 1990s, it became a wellknown supplier of integrated circuits (commonly called "chips") for video display controllers used in video cards and on motherboards for desktop PCs and laptops. In 2003, it transformed itself into being a supplier of display processors for digital televisions (primarily LCD TVs) starting from 2005, at a time when the global LCD TV market started showing strong growth. It filed for bankruptcy protection in January 2012[5] and the delisting of its common stock from the NASDAQ stock market was announced shortly thereafter.  Established in 1987, Trident gained a reputation for selling inexpensive (for the time) but slow SVGA components. Many OEMs built addinboards using Trident VGA chipsets.  get more info here about Trident Technologies

The trident is associated with the sea god Poseidon. This divine instrument is said to have been forged by the cyclopes. Poseidon struck a rock with his trident, causing a sea (or a saltwater spring, called the Erechtheis) to appear nearby on the Acropolis in Athens. And according to Roman sources, Neptune struck the earth with the trident to produce the first warhorse. Poseidon, as well as being the god of the sea, was also known as the "Earth Shaker", believed to cause earthquakes; some commentators have extrapolated that the god would have used the trident to cause them, possibly by striking the earth. In the Renaissance artist Gian Bernini's sculpture Neptune and Triton (1622–23), Neptune is posed holding a trident turned downwards, and is thought to reenact a scene from Aeneid or Ovid's Metamorphosis where he is calming the waves to aid Aeneas's ships

Trident was an early pioneer in embedded DRAM, a semiconductor manufacturing technology that combines a graphics controller and framebuffer memory on a single chip. The resulting combo chip saves valuable board space by eliminating multiple RAM chips normally required for framebuffer storage and offers other benefits offset by increased manufacturing costs per bit. To do. It was competing with NeoMagic in this market.

Although Trident has had some success in its 3D Image and Blade 3D product lines, Intel's entry  into PC graphics has marked the end of the bottom-end graphics chip market. Trident has worked with motherboard chipset suppliers several times to integrate  graphics technology into  motherboard chipsets (ALi CyberALADDiN, VIA MVP4, etc.) with little success. Read more...
